The Story of Ekmattra

Our primary inception started back in 2003 We observed the plight of the rootless disadvantageous children living on the street in the Dhaka city. We realized the risks of these children that they were at the brink of misuse and abuse. Existing social injustice and discrimination has provoked them to sustain miserably on the street, but as there is no alternative for them to sustain fairly, they are bound to grasp unfair means to survive. In this sensible ground, we felt a quick urge to do something effective for them. However, at that time, we did not have any major plan to establish an organization. We just started an open sky school for them.
Our initial objective was to teach them basic life skills and knowledge of words and numbers, health and hygiene education, and to provide them a piece of recreation by singing, painting or playing outdoor games. Education through entertainment might help them to ease the pain of their monotonous life. At one stage, we realized that they need something more beyond their basic needs—food, cloths, shelter and education. They required close mental support and family bonding. Support for children limited to streets were insufficient to provide extended care to the children. Therefore, we started to plan accordingly and tried to communicate with other who can support and contribute to materialize the dream to build a better future for these children. In 2004, we formed Ekmattra Society with the registration [S-3850(639)] from the Joint Stock Company Act authorities of the Government of Bangladesh. We started the organization with a temporary rescue center and shelter home in Mirpur area that hosted 13 children and one staff.

Initially I along with my friends started Ekmattra from the very basic liability towards the society’s underprivileged community. Being a part of a privileged world I have always thought that ignoring the reality of the underprivileged children should not be accepted in society. We wanted to keep the privileged community connected to the less privileged group of people in a unique and creative way. We have tried to address the inequality among the children through different approaches. When I see a child from the street is living a happy and healthy life with the support from Ekmattra I find my drive to work more for them. We have always tried to make Ekmattra a self-dependent organization other than only being a donor-based entity. That is why as well as utilizing funds from donors we are inventing creative initiatives to make Ekmattra Society sustainable and self-sufficient with the support of our large group of partners and supporters. In the coming days, no matter how long it takes I want to see a Bangladesh free from child labor where every child is treated equally in society. I believe Ekmattra will be a key driver to bring that enlightened future in this country and beyond.

I have joined Ekmattra so that I can work with the children and make a greater impact to improve the lives of the underprivileged children of Bangladesh. The cooperation and amicable environment here is motivating me to work tirelessly for improving the lives of all disadvantaged children of Bangladesh and beyond.
The reason behind my joining in Ekmattra Society is to work for the children who need support the most. I believe no child should be a victim of discrimination and Ekmattra will allow me to eradicate discrimination against children along with providing shelter to ensure a better future for them.
I once was a child deprived of regular privileges and facilities. Ekmattra Society ensured a secured future for me and now I am going well with my career. From being an underprivileged child rescued and supported by Ekmattra to being an employee of Ekmattra is one of the greatest journeys one can ever have. That’s why I know the struggle of the underprivileged and street children of Bangladesh which is driving me to work for them
